1. Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide Paste
Baking soda is the perfect ingredient to battle mold, while hydrogen peroxide clears stains and whitens any surface! Together, they can be used to create a powerful cleaning paste that will get your tiles and grout to look new!
Mix together enough baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to form a paste. Use the paste directly on moldy or discolored spots on your grout. Wait for 15-20 minutes for the paste to lift the stains, and use a soft-bristled brush to scrub away at the loosened grime. Repeat as needed, and your grout will be back to its sparkling white cleanliness!
Use the same baking soda and hydrogen peroxide paste on your toilet rim as well as underneath the rim to get rid of any mold and mildew that may be thriving there. The paste mixture can be used in the kitchen as well to remove mold near the drains, and to whiten any grease-stained surfaces in the kitchen!
2. One-ingredient All-purpose Cleaning Spray
This one-ingredient cleaning spray is the easiest and cheapest way to get your house cleaned. Simply dilute some distilled white vinegar with some clean water, and place the solution into a spray bottle. This spray can be used for different surfaces, except marble and natural stone floors or countertops.
Spray the solution on spots where there are stains, mold, and soap scum. Wait for 10-15 minutes before using a scrub brush to loosen the grime. Wipe dry, or rinse if preferred. This spray is most effective on smooth surfaces to remove greasy fingerprints, and in your toilet to deodorize and clean at the same time!
If you’re worried about the smell, the sour, vinegar smell should wear off after the solution has dried, but you can add a few drops of essential oil to your all-purpose cleaner for a refreshing scent that lasts even after the solution has already dried up!
3. Lemon and Salt Kitchen Scrubber
Kitchen materials are tricky to clean, as you prepare your food in the kitchen. You don’t want to be eating bleach with your dinner, so you will need to consider how safe your kitchen cleaning supplies are when it comes to your food.
Lemon and salt act as an effective scrubber for kitchen grime that is both inexpensive and safe for you and your family. Using half a slice of lemon, some rock salt, and a little elbow grease, you can create a scrubber for your sinks, countertops, and even your chopping boards! Use the lemon scrubber to remove the burnt bits from pans as well, or descale that water heater.
This lemon and salt scrub is the best way to clean out those grooves in your chopping board, especially when used with baking soda for extra cleaning power! The juice from the lemon lifts up the dirt from your chopping boards, while the baking soda and salt work to scrub away the grime. Plus, the ingredients are safe to consume, so there is little hazard involved!
4. Pest-controlling Garden Spray
Not a lot of people consider their garden to be part of house maintenance, but the garden is just as important to keep clean as the rest of the house. If you grow your own food via urban gardening, then you would know how pesky it is to have pests around your crops and greenery.
At the same time, you wouldn’t want to use a chemical spray since you’ll be eating these vegetables. Instead, use a spray mixture made with dishwashing soap and water. Add two teaspoons of dish soap to 500mL of water, and mix thoroughly. Spray your pest-infested plants every 5-7 days until you no longer see pests in your garden!
The soap breaks down when you rinse your crop yield, so there is no worry about ingesting dish soap with your food! Alternatively, you can create a neem oil solution that is safe for you, and for the beneficial insects that help pollinate your plants such as butterflies and bees.
5. DIY Sink Declogger
Nothing could be worse than a clogged sink, as these are notoriously difficult to clean up after. When you notice your drain flowing slowly, it’s time to create a DIY de-clogger that will get rid of the obstruction and deodorize your drains at the same time!
Add a cup of baking soda into your slow drain, and follow with two cups of vinegar. Let the mixture bubble and sit for 10 minutes, then flood your drains with freshly-boiled water. Your drain should work much better than before, and any smells would have dissipated as well!
Do the same for your garbage disposal, especially when it starts to smell. Add some rock salt down the garbage disposal before you add in your hot water, and turn on the disposal to crush the salt. The rock salt will scrub off any remaining dirt, and the hot water should rinse all that grime away!
