New EV Battery Technology Is About to Quietly Change Electric Cars for the Better

Battery technology has taken a few bold leaps over the course of the last decade, but one of the biggest advancements in the industry has been the shift to liquid-cooled batteries. Even though the liquid technology has been around for a little while now, it’s only recently become widely-used in all electric cars on the market. The reason is that the liquid-cooled batteries have one big advantage over their air-cooled counterparts: they’re much smaller. Much, much smaller.

There’s a new EV battery technology that’s about to change the game with electric vehicles. Over the last year, Panasonic has been showing off its new battery technology at trade shows and in the media. The company says the new battery type, called the “HMC,” can store more energy than the best lithium-ion batteries on the market today, and it can do so without the negative side effects that conventional lithium-ion batteries can produce. One of the downsides of lithium-ion batteries is that they can dramatically overheat. This can cause the battery to degrade and the car to become damaged. The new Panasonic battery technology reportedly deals with that problem.

Over the last 15 years, the electric car revolution has taken hold. Many people dream of owning an electric car, and Tesla’s Model S sedans are the most popular luxury vehicle on the road. Unfortunately, most electric vehicles are still too expensive for many buyers, and they remain out of reach of those who can’t afford them. But the future of electric cars may be brighter than you think, because of a new breakthrough from Carnegie Mellon University.

Electric cars are one of the most controversial topics in the auto industry. Electric vehicles have the potential to undo much of the damage done to the earth by burning fossil fuels, such as coal. They can help future generations to breathe easier, both literally and figuratively. Despite all the positive side effects of switching from fossil fuels to electricity, some car enthusiasts still resist the advent of electric cars. Thanks to new battery technology, gas enthusiasts will soon lose one of their strongest arguments.

Uprising EV

In 1997, Toyota introduced the Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Later, other automakers gradually began producing hybrid cars, but they still could not compete with regular gasoline cars. Then, in 2006, a small start-up in Silicon Valley announced a ridiculous plan to build electric sports cars. That company was Tesla. Today, Teslas are the most common electric cars on the road.

How did a young car company survive decades of ridicule to become one of the world’s most successful automakers? There are many arguments to be made for the company and its eccentric CEO, but the bottom line is that gasoline is not a sustainable fuel in a world where carbon emissions have become a global problem. So the argument for switching to an electric car seems simple, but the practicality is a strong argument for those who prefer gasoline.

Electric vehicle problem

As with most new technologies, electric vehicles will have to overcome a number of issues before they reach maximum efficiency. Electric motors, batteries and charging times are the biggest pitfalls of owning some EVs on the market. Companies like Tesla may have optimized their cars to run on electricity, but the rest of the auto industry is still making adjustments.

Lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles are susceptible to combustion or freezing due to their chemical composition. The graphite electrodes used in most electric car batteries can easily be improved to extend their life. Solid-state batteries, i.e. batteries based on solid electrolytes such as ceramics, are becoming a much better alternative.

World domination

According to MotorTrend, companies like BMW and Ford are already developing batteries similar to solid-state batteries. These batteries charge the cars so quickly that the process is no different from filling a conventional gasoline tank. General Motors is also working on wireless battery management that will reduce the amount of expensive and dense copper wiring that makes current EV batteries so unwieldy.

With companies like Ford fully committed to the transition to electric vehicles, there’s no reason why new and improved batteries can’t dominate the world. If consumers think hybrid and electric cars are just a phase, check out the Ford F150 Lightning. If Ford makes electric trucks, electric cars and their batteries will probably be around for a long time.

If you’ve been following the news about electric cars, you probably know that the lithium-ion battery is a hot topic in the automotive world. And while the issue of weight and capacity has been well-documented, the real issue is the growing price tag of the most common form of energy storage..
