To count or not to count: JB & Ryan talk calories |

The subject of calories has been one of the most debated topics in the fitness industry for some time now. Many swear by the accuracy of counting your calories, while others claim that good old counting calories is not only inaccurate, but also detrimental to your health.

In early 2013, we started a blog called “Measuring My Life”, and since then we’ve written about our weight loss and weight maintenance goals, diet, fitness, and the ups and downs of being on a diet and trying to lose weight. Last year, we decided to count calories as a way of staying accountable for our food choices, and one of our goals for 2015 was to actually lose weight and stay at a healthy weight. Our experiment with counting calories has been going well, and so far we’ve lost 5 pounds each, and we’ve been happy with the results.

Over the past couple of years, counting calories has become a pervasive part of the fitness community. Counting is considered an important element of nutrition and health, but how many calories can be eaten in a day is perhaps the most hotly debated facet of nutrition.

There’s a lot of discussion on the internet right now about the relative merits of calorie counting vs. intuitive eating. Which is the superior option? Listen to this interview to learn more.

Some argue that calorie counting is preferable. Others argue that intuitive eating is preferable. So, who is correct?

Neither, in our opinion.

Finally, weight and fat reduction (or increase) are linked to energy balance. In other words, if your energy balance is negative (i.e., you eat less than you burn), you will lose weight and fat. In the case of gaining, the opposite is true.

So there’s no avoiding the problem of energy balance.

But it doesn’t imply we should join Fit Day, turn on the digital scale, and start weighing everything we eat. There are additional methods for regulating energy balance.

Having said that, we think there is a time and a place for calorie counting. There’s a time and a place for intuitive eating, just as there’s a time and a place for intuitive eating. When is the best time to do each?

So, listen to this conversation between Ryan Andrews and me. We discuss what circumstances are appropriate for utilizing calorie counting to enhance our physiques in it. And in what circumstances should a more intuitive approach be used?
